Curcumin has taken the world by storm as a natural anti-inflammatory, but is notoriously poorly absorbed. Absorption and bioavailability has been central to industry advances to ensure effective delivery. PRECAUTIONS & CONTRA-INDICATIONS

  • Pregnancy and lactation: Turmeric is likely to be safe when used as a spice, but the safety of therapeutic doses has not been established.
  • Curcumin has no major side effects.
  • Turmeric can cause gallbladder contractions and should not be used by individuals with gallstones or bile duct obstruction.
  • Turmeric has an antiplatelet effect and should be discontinued for at least two weeks before elective surgery.
  • Concomitant use with prescribed anticoagulant drugs not advised.
  • Animal studies suggest curcumin may reduce the efficacy of cyclophosphamide (a chemotherapeutic agent). Concomitant use is not advised.
